Black Betty on Cherbourg - Needles Course
Following the Junior Offshore Group’s Cowes – Cherbourg race Ian Griffiths with co skipper Will Wilkinson saw an opportunity earlier in the week to launch an attempt on the Cherbourg – Needles IRCRecord Course.
Sadly the forecast did not go quite their way with a mid channel shut down in the wind that scuppered their chances of mounting a challenge on the existing double handed record time of 9h 47m 45s [Corrected] set by Christian Teichmann & Hugh Brayshaw onboard the JPK 1030 ‘Vela Roja’.
Ian Griffiths commented: “We started with 12 TWS as we left the 2-fort starting line behind us; then the wind shut down a mile out into the attempt for a good hour before filling in. The forecast predicted much stronger but hey, so you get given a lemon, and you try and make lemonade. Not ideal, but we had a glorious day’s sailing with the occasional opportunity to play with some mini-sends.”
